Drastic Developments at Washington Square

Photos Liza Béar December 11-13 2007

This is not some digitized special effects for "I Am Legend", it's the sobering reality following Judge Joan Madden's recent decision. She rejected the community's call in their final lawsuits for Parks to do an Environmental Impact Statement prior to starting construction. Go to http://squaringoff.blip.tv for videos about more misrepresentation, at the highest echelons of the Parks Dept, about the cost of relocating the fountain, estimated by an independent study to be $508,000.

I was horrified when I entered the park the other night on my way home. I thought it was some cruel joke by the police, some sort of pre-emtive riot control measure. When I entered the park I found myself caught in a maze of tall fencing. In fact my heart rate began to quicken as I realized I might be an easy target for a mugger, because it was dark, and I could not find my way out between the fencing easily. It's a terrible disservice to the any person making use of hte park, whether the are a seasoned member of the community or a tourist. Shame on New York...it looks and feels like a war zone, and I am dismayed and depressed that we will be forced to live with this till '09. -rebecca major

I entered the park the other night to find a dizzying arrangement of tall wire fencing. It was dark and I began to be scared that I could not find my way out and that I could become an easy target for a mugger. I fleed the park in a somewhat paniced state. It looks and feels like a war zone! I am dismayed and depressed that our park is occupied in this militaristic and inhuman manner. They have ruined the park for seasoned New Yorkers and tourists alike! Shame on them!!
